Small intestine absorbs cholesterol from diet; Cholesterol absorption inhibitor medication reduces the cholesterol by inhibiting absorption of dietary cholesterol.

  • ezetimibe (Zetia).
Zetia can be used in combination with any of the statin drugs.

Who can be benefited by Zetia

  • Not reaching their cholesterol targets on maximal doses of other medications,
  • Unable to tolerate other cholesterol medications because of liver, muscle, or other side effects.

How to take Zetia

  • Take this medication at the same time each day with or without food.
  • If taking Sequestrants, it should be taken at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after taking Zetia.

Possible side effects of Zetia

  • The most common side effects related to the use of Zetia include stomach irritation, headache, abdominal pain, constipation or diarrhoea.
  • If taken along with a statin medication the possible side effects may be: headache, fatigue, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhoea, nausea, muscle weakness.
Stop the statin medication and contact the doctor immediately if experience: Muscle tenderness or soreness, unexplained muscle pain, general malaise, fatigue and weakness, and Fever.
