Starting School

Hi, my daughter is starting her schooling this October. My daughter is at her 5 and was diagnosed as type 1 diabetes just one year back. Her diabetes has been managed with a pump and continuous blood sugar meter. Her system erratically produces some insulin and thus additional insulin requirements can vary quite considerably.

At an age of 5 years, she can’t able to manage her diabetes with any degree of independence.

She starts her schooling in October and I have a meeting scheduled with the school management to discuss how her condition will be managed safely.

I would be eager to hear from other parents whose young children with diabetes; how their schools deal with their child?

Type 1 diabetes School

Our grand daughter is 5 and she is in her first year of schooling, she is treated via injections no pump. Around 11 am morning she would test her blood sugar in her class and her teacher confirms her reading is over 4.0
My daughter-in-low would go to school before lunch to give her the nova-rapid injection to cover her lunch.

If our grand daughter seems distressed or quiet her teacher would instruct her to test and if blood sugar is low she will be provided with sugar candy already stocked by us in her class room. I her blood glucose still not rises to normal after one hour the school would then ring us to check what to do next
