Vit ’C’ supplement can significantly reduce high blood pressure

Many studies show that a 500 milligram daily Vit ’C’ supplement can significantly reduce high blood pressure.

The study, published in Dec. 1999 in the medical journal Lancet, conducted by scientists at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University. It was supported by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health.

In this placebo-controlled, double-blind study conducted on 45 patients with different characteristics - varying age, sex, race, smoker status, etc. But all of them had hypertension with a diastolic pressure of more than 90 and a systolic pressure of more than 140 mm Hg.

A vitamin C dosage of 500 milligrams per day helps to reduce BP in systolic, diastolic and mean blood pressures by 9 % measured in a month. That is the systolic pressure has dropped from 158 to 143; diastolic from 91 to 83; and mean blood pressure from 113 to 103 mm Hg.

But a HIGH vitamin C dosage of 2,000 mgs has not produced any significant lowering of blood pressure.

Vitamin C is considered as an antioxidant, it would help protect the body's nitric oxide level, and nitric oxide is important compound in the body to relax blood vessels that helps to gain healthy blood pressure.
