What Is Sleep Quality?
Sleep quantity and quality are entirely different. You might get enough hours of sleep (quantity), but does not necessarily mean you are getting a good quality of sleep (quality - most restful sleep).
Everyone knows the importance of sleep quantity- but you should also understand the importance of quality. Adults need about seven to nine hours of sleep a night and need to wake up feeling well-rested with essential physical, mental, and emotional restoration benefits.
How to measure Sleep Quality?
Sleep quality is the assessment of how well your sleep is restful and restorative. Sleep quality may vary among individuals and there will be age differences. There are 4 important parts that are assessed to measure sleep quality:
Sleep latency: It is how long it takes you to fall asleep. Drifting off within 30 minutes of the time you go to bed suggests that the quality of your sleep is good.
Sleep waking: How many times do you experience waking up during the night? Frequent wakefulness can disrupt the sleep cycle and affects sleep quality. A night's sleep without waking up in the night or once is considered as good quality sleep.
Wakefulness: It refers to how many minutes you spend awake during the night. People with good sleep quality have 20 minutes or less time of wakefulness during the night.
Sleep Quality Calculator
This sleep quality calculator helps you to assess your quality and quantity of sleep by calculating sleep efficiency.
Sleep efficiency is the total amount of time you spend sleeping while in bed. A sleep efficiency of 85 percent or more is considered to be good quality sleep for optimal health benefits.
The total sleep time is your total time in bed (in minutes) minus how many minutes it took you to fall asleep and minus how many minutes you spent awake during the night. Divide this actual sleeping time by your total time in bed (in minutes), then multiply it by 100 to arrive at your sleep efficiency in percentage.
